About Us

Our Rabbis tell us that the study of Torah is considered equivalent (if not superior) to prayer. JCCWH recognizes this and encourages its members to participate in the many courses and lectures that are offered on a continuing basis at our synagogue.

Our adult education programs are varied to meet the diverse interests of our congregation. Full length classes as well as mini-courses are available for the study of Tanach, the Talmud, Hebrew and Jewish history and literature.

Each fall, Rabbi Art Vernon teaches a weekly evening course on topics ranging from "The Stories of David" to the "Halachic Process"; in the spring, we participate in the community-wide SAJE (South Shore Adult Jewish Education) program; and for the past seven years we have celebrated the festival of Shavuot with an all-night Tikkun with study sessions led our by rabbi, cantor and members of the congregation.

In 1998, the Toby & Frank Wexler Fund for Furtherance of Jewish Education was established at the synagogue and founded by their grandson, David Heller to bring renowned scholars-in-residence to our community. These scholars have included David Roskies, Professor of Jewish Literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary; Arna Poupko, Judaic Consultant of the Montreal Federation; Henry Abramson, Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Florida Atlantic University; and Rabbi Howard Addison,a nationally-recognized authority on Jewish spirtituality and mysticism.

It is hoped that a commitment to study will generate dialogue between members leading to a greater involvement in Jewish community and religious life.

Rabbi Art Vernon

Rabbi Vernon is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly. He received his BA Degree at Hunter College in the Bronx and his Rabbinic Ordination at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, New York; where he also earned both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Hebrew Literature. In 1998, he was awarded the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. Rabbi Vernon also did graduate study at the Jewish Theological Seminary, as well as New York University. Most recently, he was the spiritual leader of Congregation Ahavas Sholom in Newark, and Congregation Beth Torah, in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Rabbi Vernon brings more than twenty five years of experience in the area of Jewish education to the JCC of West Hempstead. He was the founding principal of the Solomon Schechter Day School in Bergen County, New Jersey and the Bergen County High School for Jewish Studies. He served as Director of Educational Development at the Jewish Education Service of North America (JESNA) and has published more than fifteen articles in national professional and organizational periodicals. He was also President of the Council for Jewish Education.

Rabbi Vernon is married to Michele. They have four children and three grandchildren.

A few words from the Rabbi:

As the rabbi of the Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, a traditional, egalitarian Conservation congregation, I know that we are quite diverse in many ways. And yet, we belong to this sacred community because we share certain ideals. As a congregation, members of all ages are committed to a journey of Jewish living, faithful to the traditions of our ancestors and responsive to the demands of the society in which we live. We encourage our members to be serious Jews, in worship, in study, in the performance of acts of kindness and in correcting the deficiencies in our world. We invite you to join us on our collective journey as we seek to understand God's plan for our lives, for our families, for our congregation and for our community. As your rabbi, I will help guide you, sometimes challenge you, always support and comfort you and, hopefully, inspire you to become the best that you can be. I look forward to sharing our Jewish journey with you.

Cantor Todd Rosner

Cantor Rosner  has always been dedicated to the Jewish Community. "My love for the Torah and the Jewish People is the main reason why I'm a cantor. I want to do whatever I can do to inspire the young and old back to their roots."

Cantor Rosner's philosophy is reflected in his actions: holding study groups for people that want to grow and become more active Jews and providing comfort by visiting the sick. A member of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., Cantor Rosner is also involved with P Tach, Boys Town Yeshiva in Israel, and National Jewish Outreach. Perhaps his willingness to give of himself to the community is hereditary. On his father's side of the family, many are rabbis, living in Israel and involved in Jewish education.

The cantor's own educational background is quite prestigious. He studied at Sh'or Yoshuv Yeshiva under Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld, at Chofetz Chaim Yeshiva and Beis Yechekel. He studied Talmud and Bible under Rabbi Issur Yehuaah Weinberg and voice under Professor Alex Lorber. He also studied voice under Cantor Oscar Berry-Nusach and Cantor Ritter.

Honored for his work and devotion for Israel Bonds and the UJA. Cantor is married to his beloved Valerie and both Cantor and Valerie are happily residing in their home in West Hempstead with their two beautiful children.
